ReachOut is calling on young people in Victoria currently under lockdown to be proactive about their mental health and to seek support if they are struggling.
More than 300,000 Victorians have sought mental health support from ReachOut since COVID-19 restrictions were first put in place in March. That represents a 25 per cent increase in visitors to the site from Victoria compared to the same period last year.
Ashley de Silva said that now is the time for young people to apply the lessons learnt from the first round of lockdowns when it comes to their mental health.
“Going back into lockdown presents a range of challenges for young people in Victoria. Young people are telling us that they are worried and stressed about things like study, employment and the future and we know that this can take a heavy toll on mental health.
“Over the past few months, young people have learnt important things about their ability to cope with unforeseen challenges in their life. Now is a great time for young Victorians to reflect on what it was that helped keep them mentally strong during the first lockdown, or even on what they want to do differently this time around.
“Simple things like regular video calls with friends, learning how to make a new recipe or online group exercise are great.
“We hear these messages time and time again, but taking a proactive approach to looking after your mental health can have a huge impact on how you feel during and also after lockdown.
“Importantly, it's okay to not feel okay, and help is available. Digital mental health support is available for free 24/7 for young people via ReachOut.com where they can get tips, learn more about what’s happening for them and even join our peer support forums.”
For more support young people can head to ReachOut.com and ReachOut.com/COVID-19.
