Questioning sexuality: How ReachOut helps

06 Mar 2015
For young people who are questioning their sexuality and feeling uncomfortable about talking to someone in person, it can be helpful to watch a video about another young person’s experience, or to explore questions confidentially on the ReachOut forums. Here’s what our CEO, Jono Nicholas, has to say about why it’s so important to work together to support LGBTQI young people.

Every month, more than 20,000 LGBTQI young Australians visit ReachOut – that’s nearly 700 different young people every day. This incredible figure shows the struggle many young people go through when questioning their sexuality, and highlights the vital role that services like ReachOut play in supporting all young people, particularly young people who identify as LGBTQI.

There are many ways LGBTQI young people can access support and comfort through ReachOut. We share personal stories about what other young people have been through, and provide a place for young people to talk to each other through confidential peer-support forums. We also provide practical fact sheets that help young people better understand sexuality and gain insights into their personal experience.

Our research shows that that more than 75% of LGBTQI young people who visit ReachOut are experiencing high distress, which is why we partner closely with great organisations like Twenty10, ACON and QLife. These specialist support organisations provide additional help that can make all the difference to an LGBTQI young person’s life.

In a show of support for LGBTQI young Australians, we’ll take part in the 2015 Sydney Mardi Gras Parade on 7 March. Once again, we’re taking inspiration from the theme ‘Always Turned On’ – a cheeky nod to the fact that ReachOut never switches off and is available whenever a young person needs help. In Sydney? Join the crowd to watch the parade march down Oxford Street this Saturday night. Can’t make it? Check us out in the full coverage on SBS this Sunday at 8.30pm.
