Australian men, and young men, are over-represented in the data on suicide, alcohol and drug related problems, violent crime and injury resulting from dangerous behaviour. On the other side men and young men, fail to access the existing services. Only 13% of men aged 16-24 with a mental illness access any form of care.
The ‘Out of the Shed Summit’ aims to build a better understanding as to why we continue to see such data and what needs to be done to build more appropriate and effective services for 51% of the population. Over two days, eight keynote speakers will present ideas, research and clinical information to an audience of health practitioners, educators, consumers, carers, academics, policy makers, media, youth workers and community workers.
The keynote speakers will challenge and confront with a range of perspectives on men and boys in 21st century Australian society. Many are internationally recognised for their work and many work in challenging settings – working with youth, remote communities and Defence Forces.
Keynote speakers will join with other national innovators and local Sunshine Coast program leaders in a series of Masterclasses working in small groups to provide practical application and join discussions on how to enhance and expand services within your organisation or community. Confirmed speakers include Surgeon General ADF Major General Paul Alexander, Professor Patrick McGorry, AO, Steve Biddulph and Down O'Neill, AO.
A Services Expo will form part of the first day of the conference with dozens of displays showcasing resources and services. A dinner will be held on the evening of the 20th July at which Amanda Gore will MC and Steve Biddulph, bestselling author on raising boys, will present.
