NMHC Review: Now’s the time to make a generational switch in mental health service delivery

21 Jan 2015
The National Mental Health Commission’s Review of Mental Health Services and Programmes was delivered to Government late last year. The Government’s response - which we anticipate will soon be released - could signal a significant shift in mental health service delivery in Australia.

“This Review is an important opportunity to build a sustainable and robust mental health system that delivers better help to more people,” said ReachOut.com CEO Jono Nicholas.

“We recognise that Minister Ley will need time to consider the recommendations of the Review - the right response is more important than a rushed response. Notwithstanding this, with many existing funding agreements due to end on 30 June, we also look forward to having clarity as soon as possible,” he added.

Last year, a report authored by ReachOut.com and EY revealed a pressing need for Australia to shift to a 21st century mental health system. The report recommended better integration of e-mental health services such as ReachOut.com, extending support to the hundreds of thousands experiencing mental health difficulties who are unable to access traditional mental health services.

“We must reorient the mental health system in Australia to be more efficient. By shifting a proportion of funding toward promotion, prevention and early intervention, and making better use of existing e-mental health tools and services we can free up clinicians to assist those with complex needs,” said Nicholas.
