More young people will be able to access mental health and wellbeing support, following a partnership between online youth mental health organisation ReachOut and member-based student organisation Student Edge aimed at working together to deliver mental health and wellbeing content to their shared audience of young people.
Student Edge is an 850,000 member strong organisation of high school, VET and university students, which aims to help students better manage their finances, find jobs and make well-informed career and life choices. Surveys of Student Edge members found that members were also wanting the service to help with mental health and wellbeing, so approached ReachOut to collaborate.
ReachOut content will now be available on studentedge.com.au, with a particular focus on mental health issues including depression, anxiety, stress and body image, and sensitive life issues like sex and relationships. The first of the content will be up today with more content added over the next four weeks.
ReachOut CEO Jono Nicholas said that the partnership made sense as the two organisations have a shared interest in the wellbeing of 14-25 year olds.
‘We know that 70% of young people who experience mental illness don’t get the help they need – so we need to find new ways of delivering more support to more young people in the spaces that they are comfortable, without relying on them having to come to mental health services first.
‘By partnering with Student Edge, we are ensuring that when Student Edge members want to find information or support on a number of mental health and wellbeing issues, they’ll be accessing trusted evidence-based content and tools on a range of issues,’ Mr Nicholas said.
ReachOut and Student Edge will also work together to develop mental health and wellbeing materials to augment Student Edge’s existing Cyber Safety, Job Readiness, and Life After School programs in schools; and will identify opportunities to cross-promote each organisation’s Forums, including development of guest moderator program, automatic responses directing ‘pointy-end’ conversations to appropriate services, and referrals to threads on the ReachOut forums.
Student Edge’s  General Manager of Marketing and Membership Choon Tan said, “Our vision is to see students empowered and supported to make great life choices. Students identified they needed help with mental health and sensitive life issues – so we are excited that with ReachOut we can now provide that support for them.
‘We’re looking forward to working closely with ReachOut and exploring new ways to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people.’
