ReachOut Australia has joined the mental health sector’s call to the leaders of the states and territories and the Australian Government imploring COAG to urgently work together to reform the nation’s struggling mental health system.
The joint open letter urges all governments to work collaboratively in order to achieve system reform, and calls COAG to act on the commitments it made in response to a mental health sector letter in 2012.
These commitments included the adoption of clear targets and indicators for improving mental health outcomes as well as a fully developed and funded national agreement on mental health reform.
“A national approach requires engagement at all levels of government, and the upcoming COAG meeting is the place to start. We must work quickly to build on the National Mental Health Commission’s Review of Mental Health Programs and Services,” said ReachOut Australia CEO Jono Nicholas.
A Way Forward, a recently published report by ReachOut Australia and EY, demonstrates that e-mental health services must be recognised as a critical part of a national, stepped-care approach to mental health reform.
“E-mental health services play a key role in our nation’s future mental health system, with the capability to immediately increase service capacity and provide help to more people around the country.”
Next week, Jono Nicholas will join other mental health organisations in progressing reform at one of the first consultations held by the Expert Reference Group.
“We’re looking forward to working with the Expert Reference Group to inform the Government’s response to the NMHC Review,” he said.
“Addressing young Australians’ poor mental health remains an enormous challenge, but we are dedicated to national collaboration and working hard to improve our mental health system’s capacity to provide them with the right care at the right time.”
