First meeting of Expert Reference Group shows progress on mental health reform

18 Jun 2015
Today marked the first meeting of the newly formed Expert Reference Group, which is tasked with guiding the Federal Government on the implementation of the National Mental Health Commission’s Review of Mental Health Programmes and Services.

Jono Nicholas, CEO of ReachOut Australia, said “We are pleased to see progress on reforming the mental health system and look forward to seeing the recommendations of the Review implemented.

“With a system that’s unable to meet existing demand and so many Australians not getting the help they need, there is an urgent need to enact many of the Review’s recommendations. This includes better integration of e-mental health services as a core part of the mental health system.

“Swift action from the Government and the Expert Reference Group will ensure that Australians, especially young Australians, get the help they need sooner. E-mental health services can be bolstered quickly, efficiently and at great scale to immediately enable countless numbers of Australians to access support.”

ReachOut Australia has a wealth of expertise from 17 years of delivering and evaluating ReachOut.com and a range of other e-mental health services, including apps and online games.

“Both the Government and the Expert Reference Group can draw on ReachOut's extensive expertise to help ensure outcomes are realised as quickly as possible.

“As ever, we remain focussed on working to reducing youth suicide and providing mental health support to every young Australian who may need it.”
