Helping young people with issues of top concern

02 Dec 2011
Mission Australia’s Annual Survey of young Australians, released earlier this week, asked 45,916 young people about the things that they valued and the issues that concerned them.

The survey found that the top three issues of concern for young Australians were:

  • school or study problems (37.3% of respondents);

  • coping with stress (35.4%); and

  • body image (33.1%).

These findings tell us that ReachOut.com really is addressing the issues that are most relevant to young Australians. In November alone, ReachOut.com received 143,513 unique visitors, 41,400 of these were to factsheets that provide information and support for body image, study and school issues, and stress.

As in previous years of the survey, young people rate friends, parents and relative/family friend as their three main sources of advice and support. The internet was ranked highly as a source of advice and support for over one in five respondents concerned about sexuality, the environment, discrimination, body image, depression, and self harm.

We will continue to ensure that ReachOut.com provides up-to-date, relevant information and support for young people who are looking for help dealing with these issues, as well as depression, relationship troubles, drugs and alcohol and family conflict.
