The National Eating Disorders Collaboration has released a new online resource developed with the help of ReachOut Australia’s user experience team.
eatingdisordersinfo.org.au collates a broad range of evidence-based information in an easy-to-navigate online tool that guides young people to the right information and support for an eating disorder.
As the world’s first online mental health service, ReachOut Australia has a 17-year history of delivering online tools designed to help young people. eatingdisordersinfo.org.au is one of the many projects ReachOut has contributed to within the mental health sector.
“Collaboration with young people and our partners across the sector is incredibly important to us. When service providers work together and build on each other’s strengths, we can create innovative products that meet consumers’ needs and make it possible for more people to get the help they need,” said ReachOut Australia CEO Jono Nicholas.
For eatingdisordersinfo.org.au, ReachOut conducted participatory design workshops with young people to establish a set of guidelines for developing the resource. The workshops explored the online information and help-seeking needs of young people, particularly in relation to eating disorders.
“We always start by asking young people about their lives and what it is they want and need. Together with the National Eating Disorders Collaboration and young people, we developed a set of guidelines that laid the groundwork for the online resource, which others can use to build effective online tools that work for young people.”
The guidelines are highlighted in the report Eating Disorders & Online Resources for Young People: User Experience Guidelines for Prevention and Early Intervention of Eating Disorders, which is a valuable asset for service providers wanting to understand what young people look for in an online help resource.
